Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra hopped on helicopter to see flooded areas by her own eyes. She flew over to see Ayutthaya, Nakorn Sawan and Sukhothai provinces where the government has planned parts of these provinces to be flood receiving areas in order to protect economic and public areas.
Sukhothai, one of Thailand’s famous ancient cities, its busy city area was partially covered by water. Water level is receding gradually as Thai authorities have quickly applied flood relieving techniques they have learnt well from last year.
According to Arjit Suwanichwong, an officer from Irrigation Department said that the situation is now under control, temporary flood barriers were put up, and authorities should be able to start pumping water out today and to continue fixing leakages on water levees.
Pictures of influx of water rushed into Sukhothai’s river side area through leakages on under -maintained water levees, have triggered Thai public concern of last year disaster. Even though the causes of flood in Sukhothai were accidental and different from last year, Yingluck can not avoid public anxiety.
Thai first female premier has started her tours to inspect areas, as an attempt to put off public panic. She has ordered authorities along downstream provinces to prepare for seasonal floods while her Water and Flood Management Commission’s plan has been fully kicked off and ministries concerned are now on alert mode, after an annual monsoon arrived.
She said “I have ordered other (down stream) provinces to be ready for volume of water that will be coming down from Phrae and Sukhothai provinces. I am here today to follow up on flood preparation, which I have to say, we have done our best. As I said the floods which happened presently are seasonal and natural, we can not dictate nature.”
The Thai administration recently launched an exhibition on Flood Prevention Plan, it was aimed to boost confidence among investors and educate Thai public. Yingluck said her government has done its best on manly manageable elements and in terms of preparation for this year flood. Level of water and amount released from major dams are closely controlled and monitored. Additionally there are flood receiving areas designated and prepared. Water drainage system has been fully implemented to allow water rundown to the sea at the possible fastest rate. But there are 2 naturally uncontrollable factors, sea level and amount of rains that could hamper an effectiveness of her flood management task, she said.
